About Me

Product design is my passion as well as my job

My design philosophy is to take a holistic approach to design problems and understand the bigger picture. This helps create products with an innovative edge. I also strive to keep designs simple and clean from both a functional and aesthetic point of view. Less is more in my design world.

Background

After graduating with BSc in Product Design (Hons) at Bournemouth University, I worked for the kitesurfing company Flexifoil. I was taken on to develop a safe control system for a kite surf kite. This was an exciting opportunity as the sport was still in its infancy and led to me developing several products which dramatically improved the safety of the sport. Most systems on the market now days are based on the work I did back then. Flexifoil allowed me to visit overseas manufacturers and introduced me to the world of mass production and, more importantly, designing for it.

From there, I moved to the aerospace industry which helped me hone my mechanical precision engineering skills. This was all about low volume and attention to detail, I found it was a valuable learning experience. I also learnt a lot about process control through the design and production stages by helping to transfer key aerospace products over to a Sri Lankan factory for production.

Recent Work

Since then, I have been freelancing. One of my main clients is the telecommunications company Cambium Networks, part of the Motorola group until a couple of years ago. I have worked with their electronic and RF engineers to develop a range of innovative new products and am now proud to say I have several patents to my name.

I have also designed several products for the RNLI lifeboats. This involves understanding their product requirements then generating concepts and detailing a solution which they have taken into production. Parts I have designed can be seen on offshore and inshore lifeboats around the UK waters.
