AeroSense Production Fixtures

A tightly controlled and repeatable manufacturing process is of the up most importance when producingaerospace components. The smallest of errors in manufacturing can have disastrous consequences. Every parameter must be controlled and the chance of human error eliminated so that the products produced throughout production of a consistent high quality and reliability.

I have been involved in developing key production procedures for load sensing products. A key stage of producing an accurate loading sensing component is the accurate placement of the strain gauges which measure small changes in deflection of the component they are applied to. The measuring element of the strain gauge can be as small as 2mm long which means that placement of the gauge is critical. I developed almost other fixtures a vision system to aid this process.

Other fixtures I have designed include:

  • Fixtures for applying an even pressure across the strain gauge when bonded at +150C
  • Moulds for the potting and encapsulation of electronic components with a mechanical housing
  • Fixtures to aid inspection
  • Fixtures to protect the parts during production

Another element to the productionisation of safety critical components is performing design validation tests on custom production designed equipment. This ensures the equipment fulfills the requirements in a repeatable manner.
