Design museum - London
I was in London this weekend and popped into the design museum. I hadn't been there since it had moved and its now in a much larger and newer building on Kensington high street next to Holland park. The building is great, its large and fairly minimalistic which means to doesn't distract from the cool things inside.
Upstairs is free to enter and shows some good examples of the design process and some classic designs. There is also a larger 3D printer (fuse deposition machine) printing unusual shaped things to show what is possible.
After the standard photo next to the designer poster we headed downstairs to the Beazley 'design of the year' awards. This is where you get to see a range of entries from different categories, fashion, digital, product, architecture and then vote for your favourite one. Being a product designer i was biases towards the product design entries and the 'a way to talk face to face in any language' got my vote. Mainly because i think improving communication will have the greatest benefit.
Ikea's screwless assembly method was also interesting from a production and sustainability point of view. Less dissimilar materials is good thing when it comes to recycling and end of product life.
If you have a spare afternoon in London, i can recommend it. The sandwiches are good too.
